Countertop donation benefits new children's hands-on science center
June 23, 2009 - Moani Wright-Van Alst
The Three Ring Ranch in Kailua-Kona held a blessing ceremony last weekend for its new AG building where a hands-on science program will be taught. The new facility includes new granite countertop workstations, donated by Hawaii's premier natural stone company, Bella Pietra.
"We wanted granite because of its durability and because it will be easy to keep sanitary," said Ann Goody, Three Ring Ranch Director-Curator. "We are very grateful to Bella Pietra for their donation. The children are the real winners here because they now have a place where they can do advanced science and learn about Hawaii's wild animals."
The center, a single room facility with an 18' x 20' covered lanai, houses extensive specimen collection, lab equipment, a microscope, a computer and video equipment. The new science center will allow students and visitors to learn about Hawaii's wild animals and experience science through a very hands-on practical teaching approach.
"This new center will allow science to come alive," added Goody. "Children will actually get to see animals at our facility and then look at samples from these animals in a microscope in our new science center. We know this new center will help with our mission to create a generation of environmentally aware youth while providing the ultimate in rehabilitative care for our native and endangered species."
Bella Pietra donated the two Samoa Granite panels and backsplashes used in the countertop workstations, an $800 value.
